Maresca, a former Leicester City and Chelsea head coach, returned to Manchester City for a third spell when the club appointed him as Guardiola’s successor, City confirmed on 29 June 2026. He previously coached City’s Elite Development Squad and worked on Guardiola’s staff during the 2022–23 Treble season. He has won all seven Premier League games of his reign so far.

Manchester City marked the record on the night of the Ipswich win:

What Record Did Maresca Break at Man City?

Maresca became the first manager to win his first seven Premier League games in charge of a club. He passed Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti and Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who each won their first six with City, Chelsea and Manchester United, as the Premier League and Manchester City both confirmed. City beat Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Coventry City, Manchester United, Sunderland, Liverpool and Ipswich, scoring 19 goals and conceding seven. Haaland has scored eight of those goals, the most of any player in the league, AP reported.

The run also gives City their best start to a league season in 129 years, BBC Sport notes. Only Chelsea in 2005-06 (nine) and Liverpool in 2019-20 (eight) have won more opening Premier League games, and both went on to win the title. “For sure I didn’t expect to win seven out of seven,” Maresca told the BBC.

Was the Ipswich Score 3-1 or 3-2?

It finished 3-2. Phil Foden scored first, Daizen Maeda equalised, and Erling Haaland struck twice before Zian Flemming converted a 90th-minute penalty. Some early reports said 3-1 because they went out before that late penalty. The win came days after the Premier League’s financial-rules verdict, which we cover in our Manchester City news and 115 charges explainer.

Who Is Enzo Maresca? A Short Man City Manager Biography

Maresca comes from the province of Salerno in southern Italy and built his coaching career across Italy and England. His City path reads like an apprenticeship: youth coach, assistant, then manager.

  • Ascoli and West Ham (2017–2019): assistant roles, including under Manuel Pellegrini at West Ham.
  • Man City EDS (2020–21): won Premier League 2 in his only season.
  • Parma (2021): first senior head-coach job; Parma dismissed him in November 2021.
  • Man City staff (2022–23): worked under Guardiola in the Treble season.
  • Leicester City (2023–24): won the Championship and promotion.
  • Chelsea (2024–26): won the Conference League and the Club World Cup in 2025; follow the club’s current story in our Chelsea news and Moisés Caicedo pages.
  • Manchester City (2026–): manager on a contract to 2029.

Why Did Maresca Leave Chelsea?

Maresca resigned and left Chelsea on 1 January 2026, with the team fifth and one win from seven league games. Chelsea later said he had told them in autumn 2025 about a chance to succeed Guardiola. Sky Sports reported that City would pay Chelsea £17m in compensation, and Maresca apologised publicly for the disruption.

What Is Maresca’s Salary at Man City?

Neither Manchester City nor Maresca has published his salary, and no major outlet has confirmed a figure. Salary-tracking websites quote estimates, but we cannot verify them, so we do not repeat them here.

How Does Maresca Set Up His Teams?

Maresca wants control. “We need to control everything,” he said before the AEK Athens game. The Times reported that City admire his man-management and his commitment to attacking football, and chief executive Ferran Soriano called him the “stand-out candidate”.

How Does Maresca Compare With Pep Guardiola?

Guardiola won his first six Premier League games in 2016; Maresca has now won seven. The experience gap remains huge, though: Guardiola managed 593 City games and won 20 major trophies, while Maresca has managed 11. The two men know each other well from the 2022–23 Treble season, and Guardiola watched from the stands as Paris Saint-Germain beat City 4-2 in the Champions League on 14 October, Sky Sports reported.

Who Was Man City Manager Before Maresca?

Pep Guardiola. He managed City from July 2016 and stepped down after 593 games, a club record, and 20 major trophies: six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the 2023 Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup. His last game ended in a 2-1 home defeat to Aston Villa on 24 May 2026. City announced his departure on 22 May 2026 and renamed the expanded north stand the Pep Guardiola Stand. He now works for City Football Group as a Global Ambassador.

The Man City manager before Pep was Manuel Pellegrini, the Chilean who led City from 2013 to 2016 and won the 2013–14 Premier League.

What Comes Next for the Man City Manager?

City sit top with 21 points, three clear of Arsenal (18) and five clear of Brighton (16), after Arsenal won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on 18 October. The next three games, in WAT:

Further ahead, Maresca faces his former club when City host Chelsea on Saturday 12 December.

How Does Maresca’s Streak Shape Villa v City Odds?

Bookmakers rate City heavily: ESPN odds on 19 October gave them a 78% chance to avoid defeat at Villa Park. Villa beat City twice last season, including Guardiola’s farewell, so our correct football prediction page picks “Man City or draw” at Medium confidence rather than a straight City win.
