Breaking Olympics 2024 winners Phil Wizard and Ami

Breaking made its Olympic debut at the Paris 2024 Games on 9–10 August 2024 at Place de la Concorde, and Japan’s B-Girl Ami and Canada’s B-Boy Phil Wizard won the first gold medals. The sport is not on the Los Angeles 2028 programme, so Paris remains its only Olympic appearance until the IOC rules on Brisbane 2032.

Breaking Olympics 2024: The Direct Answer

Summary of breaking and the biggest stories from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (26 July – 11 August 2024), checked against Olympics.com, AP and Reuters.

Breaking, the competitive form of the dance born in 1970s New York hip-hop culture, joined the Olympic programme in Paris as an additional sport chosen by the host city. B-Girls battled on Friday 9 August and B-Boys on Saturday 10 August, both at the urban park built on Place de la Concorde. Breakers faced each other one-on-one, dancing to tracks a DJ picked at random, so nobody knew the music in advance.

How Olympic Breaking Worked: Format and Judging

Each event opened with a round robin of four groups of four breakers. The top two in each group reached the quarter-finals, then the semi-finals and the medal battles. The B-Girls event had 17 entrants, so the 16th and 17th seeds met in a pre-qualifier battle for the last round-robin place, according to the official Paris 2024 Results Book.

A panel of nine judges compared the two breakers in every round, across five criteria that each carried 20% of the vote:

CriterionWhat judges looked for
TechniqueBody control, athleticism and use of the stage
VocabularyThe range and variety of moves: toprock, downrock, power moves and freezes
ExecutionClean, sharp moves with no slips or crashes
MusicalityHow well the breaker rode the DJ’s beat
OriginalityPersonal style and fresh, surprising ideas

Every round ended with a 9-0, 8-1, 7-2, 6-3 or 5-4 vote, so ties were impossible. Round-robin battles ran over two rounds, and knockout battles were best of three. Judges also had misbehaviour buttons to penalise disrespectful conduct.

Breaking Olympics 2024 Athletes and Qualifiers

The breakdancing Olympics qualifiers 2024 filled 32 quota places, 16 per gender, with a limit of two breakers per gender for each country. The route ran in three steps:

  • 2023 WDSF World Championships, Leuven: the winners, Victor (USA) and Nicka (LTU), booked direct places.
  • Continental qualifiers: one B-Boy and one B-Girl qualified from each of Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania.
  • Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS): Shanghai (16–19 May 2024) and Budapest (20–23 June 2024) handed out the final places.
  • Host and universality places: France got one spot per gender, and four universality places went to nations that rarely qualify.

Japan, France and the USA each sent four breakers, the maximum allowed. Nigeria did not enter a breaker, so its Paris 2024 story played out on the track and the wrestling mat instead.

Bad Breakdancing Olympics 2024: The Raygun Moment

The most-shared clip of the Games came from Australia’s Rachael Gunn, who competed as Raygun. She lost all three of her round-robin battles without winning a single judge’s vote, 54-0 across the three battles, and her “kangaroo” move became a global meme. The Australian team and the breaking community condemned the online abuse that followed, and AAP FactCheck debunked false claims that her selection was rigged.

Nigeria 2024 Olympics: Results and Context

Nigeria sent 88 athletes in 12 sports to Paris and came home without a medal for the first time since London 2012. The low point came before the track events started: Favour Ofili qualified for the women’s 100m, but officials failed to register her. She ran the 200m instead and finished sixth in the final. A federal government panel later blamed Athletics Federation of Nigeria officials for the omission.

For context on Nigeria at the Olympics schedule and results, the nation olympic games Tokyo 2020 haul was two medals: Blessing Oborududu’s wrestling silver and Ese Brume’s long jump bronze. Breaking Olympics 2028 and Brisbane 2032

Breakdancing Olympics 2028 will not happen: LA28 runs from 14 to 30 July 2028 with flag football, cricket, lacrosse, squash, baseball and softball as its additional sports, and breaking is not on the list. The WDSF submitted a formal proposal for Brisbane 2032 on 21 August 2026, and the bid now sits with the IOC Olympic Programme Working Group. IOC President Kirsty Coventry has said Brisbane will have fewer than LA’s 36 sports, so breaking faces a tight race.

Other urban sports have kept their places. Sport climbing returns in 2028 after Paris split the old Tokyo 2020 combined event in two: a speed race and a boulder-and-lead combined event, each scoring up to 100 points per discipline.

Winter Olympics and the Next Olympic Games

The Olympic Games calendar moved on fast after Paris. At the Milano Cortina 2026 winter Olympics, the 2026 winter Olympics women’s single skating free skating went to Alysa Liu of the USA, who scored 150.20 and won gold with 226.79 points. Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto took silver.
